CHAPTER SEVEN
Pride
“Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.”
Proverbs 13:10
The next week I took the buggy into Lancaster, the big city, with Mother and Ann. We decided to have a fun girls day out. What a wonderful time! The best part was holding that piece of paper in my hand that said I was now registered for the public art class at Lancaster Community Arts Center. I couldn’t believe it! My dream was coming true!
I knew Mother and Father were proud of me, and it was even better that it didn’t break the church rules. Being Amish really was the best. While in Lancaster, I even bought some new art supplies at a big fancy store lined with every kind of brush or paint I could ever want. This was the first formal training I would have as an artist and I needed to be prepared.
After we arrived back home from our big adventure day, Ann and I helped Mother put dinner on for the men. Today it was nothing fancy. We served up canned beef that we had warmed over the stove, with boiled potatoes. Homemade white bread had made it to the dinner table with the fresh apple butter that we had just put up. Canned green beans from the garden and creamed corn were our vegetables of the evening. And Ann had made a special apple cinnamon pie for us all to enjoy for dessert as a celebration for my art class and our fun day on the town.
Mother called us all to the table. We said our prayer, and then starting passing the dishes. The boys sat, with their mouths full, chomping down the food. Nothing is more affirming for a cook then to see people scarf down their food! Ann and I talked about our fun day in the city and what we enjoyed most.
Mother asked Daed about his day in the shop. Suddenly the boys stopped chewing. Ann and I looked at them, knowing that something wasn’t right. Father swallowed his bite of food then said, “Bob Dejong came to see me today with his boy Benjamin. He came through the door yelling “Nathan Yoder! Stop stealing my customers! He was yelling and carrying on, the likes of which I’ve never seen. Then when I tried to calm him down, and move him away from the public area he got in my face and said, “If you don’t stop stealing my customers, you’ll be sorry!”” Father ran his hands through his bowl cut hair, a look of sadness on his face.
“What are you gonna do Daed?” Jake asked.
“There is nothing to be done, but to let Gott handle it,” Father responded.
“Nathan, you sell the best furniture in town. If customers choose you over Mr. Dejong’s store there is nothing you can do about it,” Mother replied.
“I wonder what will happen. Will his business goes bust?” Joe questioned.
“Well Joe, we will pray it won’t,” Father responded.
“Now lets end this shop talk and finish eating supper so I can sample some of Ann’s pie.
